Before you get started. The water capacity of the pond should be 10 gallons per inch of the chelonian's shell. So if the carapace length of your turtle is 7 inches, the pond should be able to hold at least 70 gallons of water. I recommend using a prefabricated hard shell pond.

While I'm not sure how much a new tank like this would cost today, I got it, barely used, for $100 about 8 years ago. I've seen similar tanks on my local craiglist every now and then for ~$100-150.

A very popular stock tank is the 300 gallon rubbermaid which is a 5' round poly tanks 2' deep. It's not to say that a 2' X 6' long tank wouldn't make a real nice turtle environment. Stock tanks may have a drain, called a bulkhead, built in to make cleaning and water changes easier. A preformed liner is great for turtles, as it cannot be punctured by your turtle's nails. A flexible pond liner is also an option, however it needs to be a heavy duty liner of 40 mil EPDM (60 is best) to prevent punctures and tears.
